Axon enhances its 911-center portfolio by announcing a deal to purchase Carbyne and by closing its acquisition of Prepared, both of which leverage AI

Axon recently enhanced its 911-center portfolio by announcing a deal to purchase Carbyne—a pioneer in cloud-native call-handling solutions for 911—and by closing its acquisition of Prepared, which has technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) leverage data from 911 calls and other sources to accelerate response efforts.

Axon founder and CEO Rick Smith expressed enthusiasm about the potential benefits that the two deals can bring to his company and the 911 centers that deploy the solutions.

“Our latest update outlines our path towards delivering Axon 911, which will be built on the foundations of Prepared and Carbyne—a major leap toward unifying the technology needed to deliver measurably better outcomes for communities and our customers,” Smith said last week during Axon’s quarterly call with financial analysts.

Smith noted that Axon previously attempted to enter the 911 marketplace by offering a computer-aided-dispatch (CAD) solution, but company officials determined that “there was not a lot of room to innovate” in CAD. Purchasing Prepared and Carbyne is expected to let Axon enter the 911 space while maintaining greater growth and innovation possibilities, he said.

“Prepared and Carbyne are powerfully complementary,” Smith said. “Together, these capabilities [from Prepared and Carbyne] let agencies make their existing systems smarter today and provide a smooth, orderly path to full modernization over time. Both leverage AI natively to rethink what’s possibl

“This new approach … means we can innovate faster—driving real-world impact and value creation—and we will enable reciprocal data sharing and APIs to drive true interoperability, giving agencies the flexibility to modernize at their own pace. This isn’t just a cloud migration. It’s a connected platform that upgrades existing systems and makes them better. No replacement required. Customers get immediate capability upgrades while having the option to migrate older infrastructure to hyperscalar efficiency on their own timeline.”

Smith outlined how each purchase is expected to fit into Axon’s ecosystem of 911 offerings.

“Prepared is a low-friction AI capability that can be rapidly installed in any communication center, immediately giving call-takers superpowers to speed through data collection, analysis and sharing,” Smith said. “It can autonomously handle up to half of non-critical calls, freeing the human operators for true emergencies.

“On critical calls, Prepared serves as an intelligent assistant, taking on data collection so operators can focus on the human side of helping people in crisis.”

Carbyne also helps 911 centers support public-safety responses by leveraging cloud-based functionality, instead of relying on systems rooted in 1970s-era technology, according to Smith.

“Carbyne replaces on-prem call-center infrastructure with highly resilient cloud infrastructure, eliminating the enormous costs of running legacy equipment and allowing agencies to move at the exponential pace of modern technology, rather than at the glacial pace of procurement.,” Smith said.

“We see Carbyne repeating—in  voice communications—the success we had with Evidence.com in moving agency data centers to the cloud. Now, we’ll deal with their call centers.”

A principal analyst at Omdia (which is owned by Informa, as is IWCE’s Urgent Communications), Paul Bremner said the Carbyne deal bolsters Axon’s position in the public-safety marketplace.

“Axon’s acquisition of Carbyne materially strengthens its ability to compete as a full-stake public-safety platform provider,” Bremner said in a prepared statement provided to IWCE’s Urgent Communications. “The deal accelerates cloud migration, advances AI-enabled call handling, and tightens integration from PSAP intake to digital evidence and reporting. With Carbyne, Axon is now a materially stronger challenger to Motorola Solutions, raising competitive intensity and accelerating platform consolidation across public safety.

“This acquisition signals a fundamental shift toward integrated, AI-enabled platforms that unify emergency call-handling, field operations, and evidence workflows. Axon’s scale and brand validate cloud-native call-handling workflows, moving the market’s center of gravity towards cloud-first platforms.”

Carbyne founder and CEO Amir Elichai expressed optimism that the acquisition by Axon—a deal that values Carbyne at US$625 million—will benefit public-safety users.

“Carbyne was created to modernize how help arrives — by giving emergency professionals the clarity, resilience, and confidence they need in critical moments,” Elichai said in a prepared statement. “Joining Axon allows us to scale that mission globally and integrate more deeply into the broader public-safety ecosystem. Together, we’ll help agencies save time, reduce uncertainty, and improve outcomes for the people and communities they serve.”

Prepared CEO Michael Chime expressed similar sentiments about his company being purchased by Axon.

“We started Prepared to ensure every emergency call gets the best possible response,” Chime said in a prepared statement. “Together, with Axon, we can bring our platform to more communities, build new tools faster, and better support every phase of emergency response from first call to final resolution.”
