Mercado Libre Continues Reporting Improvements In The Fight Against Piracy And Counterfeiting

Mercado Libre presented its Transparency Report for the second half of 2021, with a view to continuing to build an increasingly secure and reliable experience on its e-commerce and financial services platforms.
“This new report confirms our vocation to take care of the security of the ecosystem and the experience of our users, while also reflecting everything we do to collaborate with the authorities in their investigations throughout Latin America. We will continue to innovate to find tools that allow us to improve everything we already do,” said legal director of Mercado Libre, Federico Deyá.
Main Data Of The Report
At The Latam Level: the reported period, more than 16,000 requests for user or transaction information were received from authorities, of which more than 90 per cent were answered with the requested information, while the remaining 10 per cent were incorrect requests or requests for information that Mercado Libre does not possess.
Only 1.09 per cent of the total active publications during the semester were moderated or suspended on the platform. Compared to the previous Report, the number of publications removed due to infraction decreased by 27 per cent, highlighting the effectiveness of detection and control tools. 99 per cent of the deleted content was detected by Mercado Libre’s own teams and systems.
Through tools based on artificial intelligence and machine learning models, fraud prevention teams detect and remove infringing posts. This applies to: prohibited items according to the Terms and Conditions of Mercado Libre or according to the legal provisions of the country in question; items that infringe the rights of intellectual property owners; counterfeit items; publications that contain personal and/or contact data.
Main Data Of The Report At The Local Level
In Chile, the categories of products that concentrated the highest volume of infractions in the reported period were: Medicines; Medical equipment; Digital books; and Flora, fauna and derivatives. Mercado Libre works with systems that, in less than a second, analyze more than 5,000 variables to detect and pause or delete infringing publications in real time.
To reduce this number to a minimum, the company has established different strategic agreements in our country, making technological tools available to help combat bad practices or criminal activities. Some examples of this are the collaboration agreement with the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), launched last year, to carry out closer surveillance of the sale of veterinary medicines through Mercado Libre; or the development of the “Brand Protection Programme”, which allows thousands of brands to monitor and report publications that are in violation of their intellectual property rights. In Chile, one of the main participating brands is Apple.
Mercado Libre was the first Latin American company to adopt this practice of periodically sharing management indices that reflect its efforts to maintain a safe ecosystem, increase trust and ensure a good experience for its users. Innovation and technology drive improvements that continue to position Mercado Libre as the safest e-commerce and digital payment ecosystem in the region.
