Argentine telecom regulator Enacom authorized the installation of the Firmina fiber optic cable system in the country’s territorial waters.

Google’s second submarine cable will run from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Las Toninas, Argentina, with landing points at Praia Grande in Brazil and Punta del Este in Uruguay.

The infrastructure will have a length of approximately 13,500km and a final design capacity of 15.03 terabits per second per fiber pair.

“The installation and commissioning of this fiber optic submarine cable system will allow growth not only in technological terms, but also from an economic point of view, since the improvement of international connectivity is considered fundamental by any industry, whatever sector it operates in, due to the transversality that telecommunications and information technologies have,” the regulator said in a statement.

Stat-up of the new cable is planned for the end of 2023. Construction and installation were awarded to US company SubCom.
