Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes, Anatel) is considering overhauling one of its oldest regulations, as it seeks to modernise the rules regarding bidding for telecoms concessions.
According to TeleSintese, a consultation regarding the make-up of the watchdog’s ‘Bidding Regulation for Concession, Permission and Authorisation of Telecommunications Service and Use of Radiofrequency’ (‘Regulamento de Licitacao para Concessao, Permissao e Autorizacao de Servico de Telecomunicacoes e de Uso de Radiofrequenciarules’) opened on June 30. The original set of regulations were approved by Resolution No. 65 on 29 October 1998.
The news site quotes Anatel councillor Vicente Aquino as saying: ‘The revision seeks to allow new forms of bidding, as well as making the bidding process more agile and modern, which will contribute to the expansion of competition in the telecommunications sector and, consequently, to the expansion of access and use of services, with adequate quality and prices.’
The consultation period ends on 28 August.
