Redflow Limited announced it has signed a US$2.83 million contract with the United States Department of Defense’s (DOD) Defense Innovation Unit to deploy a prototype microgrid. Reflow will partner with Ameresco as their subcontracted engineer to deliver the project.
The project aims to extend the duration of energy storage for existing installations by repowering a solar-powered microgrid located at the Steward Air National Guard Base in New York. The repowered microgrid project will integrate Redflow’s 1.2 to 1.4 MWh long-duration energy storage (LDES) system, allowing the microgrid to become a dispatchable solar and storage resource for energy resilience.
“We have been working with the Defense Innovation Unit for the past year to support their energy resilience objectives across the military’s global operations,” said CEO and Managing Director at Redflow Tim Harris. “To be selected as the solution provider is validation that Redflow’s LDES solutions hold the potential to deliver significant benefits to the US Department of Defense installations worldwide.”
The project announcement comes shortly after Redflow’s selection for participation in the Defense Innovation Unit’s Extended Duration Storage for Installations programme. The programme matches LDES technologies to projects that demonstrate additional technological capability and provide energy resilience across the DOD’s more than 450 global bases.
System deployment and commissioning are set for the later half of 2024, and if successful, the solution could be rolled out across numerous DOD facilities and critical infrastructures worldwide.
