The former chief executive of the International Longevity Centre UK and director-general of Age Concern, Baroness Sally Greengross has died aged 86.
Greengross, who was a cross-bench member of the House of Lords, was director-general of Age Concern between 1987 and 2000. She died on June 23.
She founded the ILC and was its chief executive until earlier this year.
Professor Martin Green, chief executive of Care England and chair of trustees of the ILC, said: “Sally has been one of the most influential figures in redefining how societies across the globe respond to demographic change and ageing.
“Sally’s passionate commitment to human rights and equality inspired all she met and underlined everything she has achieved.”
Pensions minister Guy Opperman said he was “humbled and privileged” to have known Greengross.
He said: “Sally had many interests and achieved so much, but for me she was an incredible champion for older people, and fuller working lives.
“She was a critical friend, and a provider of quiet advice, to this junior minister, for which I am very grateful. She will be sorely missed.”
Greengross was also chair of the advisory groups for the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, president of the Pensions Policy Institute, and honorary vice-president of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health.
She married Alan Greengross in 1959 and had four children. Her husband died in 2018.
Greengross was born in 1935 and attended Brighton and Hove High School before going to the London School of Economics, where she would become a researcher and lecturer in the mid-1970s.
