Etsy Inc. has promoted its vice president of engineering to chief technology officer.

Rachana Kumar will take over the position Jan. 1 from Mike Fisher, who has decided to leave the online marketplace company to spend more time with his family and pursue other interests. Fisher will remain with Etsy (Nasdaq: Etsy) in an advisory capacity through April 2023.

Kumar will be based out of Etsy’s Brooklyn, N.Y. headquarters and report to Etsy CEO Josh Silverman.

She has been with Etsy for more than eight years, playing roles in product development, mobile and app penetration and buyer growth. She also recently launched Etsy’s regional office in Mexico City, growing the local team to 130 employees in 18 months.

“When I joined in 2014, there were fewer than 20 million active buyers in the Etsy marketplace. Today, there are over 88 million,” Kumar said. “Supporting that growth has required us to expand our teams, scale our systems, and leverage cutting-edge technology.”

Kumar holds a bachelor’s degree from RV College of Engineering in Bengaluru, India and a Master of Public Administration from Columbia University. She also co-founded a nonprofit to combat food waste in India.

Etsy Inc.’s portfolio includes fashion resale marketplace Depop, musical instrument marketplace Reverb, and Brazil-based handmade goods marketplace Elo7, all of which operate independently while benefiting from shared expertise in product, marketing, technology and customer support.https://www.bizjournals.com
