The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) admitted it is facing major hurdles in registering subscribers before its deadline, as only 29 per cent have been signed up.
CommsUpdate reported, that Botswana’s deadline for full registration is the end of this year (December 31), but only 795,991 (28%) have been successfully registered.
CRAN spokesperson Katrina Sikeni said operators have experienced major challenges in registering subscribers and keeping on track with targets.
Hurdles such as local authorities being resistant to setting up registration points, power failure in remote locations, slow uptake from customers, inaccurate info supplied by subscribers and lack of official ID.
Namibia began its SIM card registration programme in January with operators given 12 months to register all subscribers. Those who do not register by the deadline face their telecom services being switched off.
