Korea and the United States have released a joint declaration on strengthening research and development cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), open clouds, and 6G, and discussing digital international norms.
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) of Korea announced on Sept. 14 that they held the 7th United States-Republic of Korea ICT Policy Forum on Sept. 12-13 with the US Department of State and the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The forum was initiated in 2013 at the suggestion of the US Department of State and held for the seventh time this year. At this event, the two countries released a joint statement for the first time.
The joint statement includes strengthening cooperation in R&D in the fields of 5G, 6G, and Open LAN, providing technical support to enhance diversity in the telecommunications supply chain, discussing digital international norms and exploring ways of global solidarity, cooperating with multilateral organizations to establish AI governance and strengthening cooperation in R&D and people-to-people exchanges to grow the cloud industry.
In Washington D.C., Korean Vice Minister of Science and ICT Park Yun-gyu met with senior US government officials and expanded the scope of digital cooperation. He met with Nathaniel C. Fick, US Ambassador at Large for Cyberspace and Digital Policy, to exchange opinions about Digital New Order policies and propose raising the rank of the senior representative to maximize the forum’s performances. Park also met with Alan Davidson, administrator of the NTIA. In the meeting, the two agreed to share AI accountability and trust policies.
