A new webinar series beginning on 13 September features research on convergence towards 6G, what the metaverse could mean for healthcare, wireless communications above 100 gigahertz (GHz), network-edge machine learning, and universal decoding.

The upcoming webinars form the second series of talks presented as part of the ITU Journal on Future and Evolving Technologies.

The journal, launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in September 2020, offers comprehensive coverage of communications and networking paradigms.

Its latest special issue explores innovations in networking for smart and safe mobility with future “6G” networks. Upcoming issues will explore topics from artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to 6G time-critical applications and intelligent surfaces.

The online journal, free of charge for both readers and authors, welcomes research submissions on all topics, all year long.

Upcoming webinars:

13 September: “A peek into the deep convergence towards 6G” with Chih-Lin I, China Mobile Research Institute, China

27 September: “The future of healthcare in the metaverse” with Mihaela van der Schaar, Cambridge Centre for AI in Medicine, University of Cambridge, UK

11 October: “Wireless networking, security, and sensing above 100 GHz” with Edward W. Knightly, Rice University, US

1 November: “AI-EDGE: Designing future XG networks and distributed intelligence” with Ness Shroff, Ohio State University, US

22 November: “Deviation from the standard – Toward opening up 5G telecommunications” with Muriel Médard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US

Opportunities for research communities

ITU Academia membership and ITU Kaleidoscope conferences form two more key avenues for academics to engage in ITU’s work.

ITU Academia members can contribute to ITU expert groups responsible for radiocommunication, standardization, and development, strengthening the work of ITU as well as boosting the impact of research.

ITU Kaleidoscope conferences highlight research into key strategic topics for ITU-led standardization processes. The 2022 edition of the conference will feature expert insights on the innovation required to make the metaverse a reality.
