Despite the ease of finding available video content on free and subscription streaming services, piracy is still a concern across the Nordic region, a new report claims.
According to a new report from Mediavision, the number of pirates actually has increased in the past 12 months across Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
The report found that 17 per cent of all people 15-74 years old in the Nordics have illegally streamed or downloaded films and TV episodes in the past month, though this significantly varies from country to country.
Sweden has the highest prevalence of pirates, with 20 per cent of all 15-74 year olds engaging in the practice. By contrast, the figure stands at 13 per cent in both Finland and Denmark. Norway sits closer to Sweden at 18 per cent.
In total, approximately 3.4 million people have pirated video content in the Nordics in the past month. This is approximately 0.5 million more than last year.
Senior analyst at Mediavision, Natalia Borelius said: “Piracy has been a big challenge for rightsholders in the Nordics for many years. Even though the use of legal service is widespread, piracy is still high. This shows that availability is not the only factor that influences piracy. Other measures will be needed if these figures are to be brought down.”
